Postgraduate Veterinary Technician Internship

This is an internship for postgraduate veterinary technicians already working as an LVT, CVT, or RVT with an interest in wildlife medicine. Minimum of 1 year experience in the field is required.
This internship will give you valuable experience in the field of wildlife/zoo medicine. The internship will provide extensive hands on experience working clinically with a variety of exotic and native species. Some of your training responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: field immobilizations, the daily upkeep and cleaning of the veterinary hospital, record keeping and filing, running fecal parasite checks, manual WBC counts and differentials, placing IV catheters and running IV fluids, blood collection using the vacutainer system, filling Rx’s, following DVM /Tech orders, intubation, anesthesia, neonatal care, and wrapping packs and sterilization. You will be working closely with staff and volunteers and must be able to lift up to and sometimes more than 50 lbs. You may also work in varying degrees of hot or cold weather. A valid driver's license is required.
A $300/month stipend (for expenses) and free on-site housing are provided. If required, transportation to and from training area will be provided.
Selected person must provide proof of a negative TB test conducted within 30 days of arrival at Fossil Rim and proof of rabies vaccination (or adequate protective titer) within the year prior to starting the internship at Fossil Rim. This is will be at your own expense.
Please note: If you are selected, a background check will be done prior to your arrival. Fossil Rim is a drug-free workplace and a drug screen will take place the week prior to your internship.

Veterinary Technician Preceptorship
Oregon Zoo - Portland, OR
The purpose of the veterinary technician student program is to provide a recent graduate (<1 year) or current student of an AVMA-accredited program with hands-on training as a veterinary technician in the field of zoological medicine. A full-time, 40 hour, 12-week commitment will help to ensure that successful applicants can get the most benefit from this opportunity.
Goals for the veterinary technician student:
- Assist veterinary staff in all aspects of technical duties including, but not limited to: laboratory specimen testing and handling, general hospital upkeep, surgical preparation, nursing care, anesthesia and monitoring, health records maintenance, observation and medical treatment of animals, and daily care of hospitalized and quarantined animals. Students will be under continuous supervision by the staff veterinarians and technicians while completing these duties. There will also be opportunities for the student to observe husbandry from veterinary staff and seasoned professional zoo keepers.
- Complete a research project and present findings to interested zoo staff. The subject and presentation is dependent on the student’s interest and may pertain to current cases, larger medical management subjects, or other relevant topics

Wildlife Rehabilitation Center Internship
North Carolina Zoo - Asheboro, NC
Summary: Wildlife rehabilitation is the care of sick, injured, or orphaned native wildlife for return back into the wild, in a condition that will optimize their chances of survival. The Valerie H. Schindler Wildlife Rehabilitation Center believes that compassion, civic responsibility & environmental stewardship are lessons best learned in the company of leaders who embody & practice these values. The center is a teaching facility, scientific in their approach, compassionate in their care, and is involved in rehabilitation, research & education.
Primary Role: Interns assist with the routine daily care of wildlife patients, as well as caring for the resident animal collection. Interns' duties include preparation of diets, cleaning cages, admitting patients, feeding animals, answering phones, and record keeping. Interns will also have the opportunity to assist with medical tasks, as ordered by Veterinary staff, such as administering treatments, helping with radiographs and assisting with surgeries. In addition, interns participate in special projects, tours, training, cage building/maintenance and animal rescues. The paid intern provides supervision and guidance to volunteers and unpaid interns and acts as liaison to the veterinary staff.
Requirements: Prospective interns must be in an undergraduate, associates program, or recently graduated (within one year) from a relevant field of study, be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs., bend, stoop, stand for periods of at least 30 minute intervals, walk on variable substrate, work in all climatic conditions, be able to read & follow instructions, communicate clearly, perform simple calculations and have dependable transportation. Interns must be rabies vaccinated to care for adult self/feeding and education mammals. Unvaccinated interns may assist with the hand-rearing of orphaned mammals, care for birds and reptiles, and perform all other responsibilities. This position may not be suitable for individuals who are immune suppressed and/or pregnant. Persons who are hearing, sight, or speech impaired should bring this to the attention of the supervisor so reasonable accommodations can be made.
This internship is part of the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Councils’ Practicum Accreditation Program; interns will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the program.
Applicants: Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a career in animal care (i.e. wildlife rehabilitation, pre-vet, veterinary technician, zoo and/or aquarium and animal science students, etc.).

White Oak Conservation - Yulee, Florida
White Oak conserves and sustains some of the earth's rarest species through innovative training, research, education, breeding and field programs that contribute to the survival of wildlife in nature. White Oak Conservation is a progressive private AZA certified facility with approximately 500 individual animals representing 30 unique and imperiled exotic species. The conservation programs span 700 acres along the St. Mary's River in northeast Florida, surrounded by 17,000 acres of mixed forest and wetlands that make up the beautiful White Oak Conservation property.
The Veterinary Technician Internship provides a continuing education opportunity for certified veterinary technicians intending to work in the zoo and wildlife field. The internship will provide extensive hands-on experience working clinically with a wide variety of exotic species, alongside highly respected veterinary staff. The internship program is designed to provide the technical skills and knowledge for participants to qualify for zoo and wildlife veterinary technician positions at the conclusion of the internship.
Skills, Experiences, and Duties:
- Under the supervision and direction of the veterinary staff Veterinary Technician Interns will participate in all aspects of the veterinary department including but not limited to-
- Acting as a functioning field technician and laboratory technician
- Assisting in surgical and preventative procedures- Including set up and take down, immobilizations, exams, anesthetic monitoring, and surgical assistance
- Diagnostics - Including in house blood work, outside lab submission preparation, fecal examinations, radiology, cytology, urinalysis, & post mortem exams
- Neonatal care
- Hospital maintenance - Including equipment servicing and maintenance, stocking, and inventory, and general cleaning
- Records-medical records, filing, data entry and organizing

Details:
The Veterinary Technician Internship is a six-month paid internship. The selected candidate will receive a $1,466 monthly stipend, before taxes, and free housing at White Oak for the duration of the internship. Interns are scheduled to work 40 hours a week and rotating on-call weekends but may be asked to assist with afterhours emergencies. Interns have access to select White Oak amenities including a fitness center and swimming pool. Housing for pets and/or spouses is not available. White Oak reserves the right to terminate internships at any time.
Eligibility Requirements
- Candidates must be graduates of an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program, with preference given to Certified, Licensed and Registered Veterinary Technicians (CVT’s, LVT’s, and RVT’s).
- Applicants must have at least 1 year of experience as a licensed technician in a veterinary practice and a working knowledge of veterinary principles; anatomy, pharmacology, parasitology, hematology, radiology, anesthesiology, urinalysis, clinical and surgical techniques. Experience prior to licensing will be considered.
- Candidates should be self-motivated, able to work well alone and with others, and willing to learn new skills and make the most of the internship experience.
- Candidates must be able to lift 50 lbs., climb in and out of truck beds, remain bending/standing/ stooping for long periods of time, and work in adverse weather conditions.
- Candidates must pass a drug test upon starting the internship.
- Candidates must have proof of a valid driver’s license and proof of valid health insurance.
- Candidates must be legally able to work in the United States (US Citizen, Permanent Resident, or hold an Employment Authorization Document)
